While we enjoy our KitKat or other palm-oil soaking treats, Indonesian forests are lumbered by the minute. Only few Orangutans remain in the wild, and the species is short of extinction. In Bukit Lawang, a small village north of Medan, some of the last Orang Utans can be found. As always there are two sides of the story, some travelers prefer the easy way and choose guides that bait the apes with food – and thereby spread diseases. Others choose eco-friendly guides that care about the environment and the animals and thereby import money for preservation and export knowledge and education to the world. I went with Doni Pesik (http://treesfortreks.com/), an amazing guide that loves his forest more than anything to find some of the last wild Orangutans in the wild. Let’s spread the word.
